What is the Virginia International Tattoo? It is an annual non-stop, high energy, two-hour extravaganza of music, ceremony and entertainment presented in the grand tradition of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Nova Scotia International Tattoo.
Some interesting facts: The term "tattoo" derives from the cries of the 17th and 18th century Dutch innkeepers, who, as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signaled a return to quarters would cry, "Doe den tap toe!" -"Turn off the taps!" The sound of the "taps" caused the innkeeper's customers to depart and return to their barracks. The word "tattoo" evolved over time, and refers to what developed as a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands today.

The Virginia International Tattoo begins!
The call of the trumpets, the beat of the drums, the wail of the pipes – the mighty sounds of the Virginia International Tattoo! It's clear why the American Bus Association has put this Tattoo on their must-see list of the most exciting events in the world. Throughout history, field musicians have been vital to commanders as the sole means of relaying orders during battle. For marching, the bands kept the company or regiment in proper cadence, and served to beat the daily duty calls and ceremonies such as Reveille, Taps, the General, the Assembly and the Retreat. The distinctive and colorful uniforms were necessary to distinguish them easily on the battlefields, and were often the reverse color of those worn by the line soldiers.
The 2018 performance will have an extraordinary cast of hundreds of performers from 8 nations including audience favorites such as Norway’s Band and Drill Team of His Majesty the King’s Guard, the brilliantly costumed dancers and drummers of the Republic of Korea Traditional Army Band, and new this year, Poland’s Republic Border Guard, with their iconic instruments and costumes reflecting centuries of tradition. And as the centerpiece of this spectacular celebration, a moving salute to Medal of Honor recipients, the highest award for valor in action which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States.
