9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM [SF]
Date(s):
Tuesday - April 26, 2016
Price:
Desc.:
911MEMORIALThe National September 11 Memorial Museum has opened to memorialize those who lost their lives – and to ensure, once again, that the world will “never forget.” The museum’s power rests, first and foremost, in its location: The 110,000 square feet of exhibition space are within “the archaeological heart of the World Trade Center site.” The museum takes visitors underground…literally. It lies 70 feet below ground, so entering the museum involves descent from the light of the outside into dimly lit depths, which adds to the overall power and pathos of this hallowed ground. The museum is a tribute to the victims, to the survivors, and to their loved ones. Numerous exhibits feature photographs, audio, videotapes and recorded testimonies connected to September 11, 2001 and also to the February 26, 1993, WTC bombing.

You will be split into 2 groups for the guided tours of the Museum.

The 9/11 Memorial is a tribute to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, near the town of Shanksville, and in the attack on the World Trade Center on February 26, 1993.

When you arrive at the 9/11 Memorial, you will see the two reflecting pools, each nearly an acre in size, which are set within the footprints of the former Twin Towers. Their walls form the largest man-made waterfalls in North America, and a grove of what will eventually be more than 400 oak trees surrounds the pools. The names of the victims of the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed in bronze panels along the perimeter of the pools, serving as a powerful reminder of the unprecedented loss of life in an attack on US soil and of the iconic Twin Towers themselves.

All but one of the trees are Swamp White Oaks. You will see one Callery Pear Tree, which became known as the "Survivor Tree" after enduring the September 11, 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center. In October 2001, the tree was discovered at Ground Zero severely damaged, with snapped roots and burned and broken branches. The tree was removed from the rubble and placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. After its recovery and rehabilitation, the tree was returned to the Memorial in 2010. New, smooth limbs extended from the gnarled stumps, creating a visible demarcation between the tree’s past and present. Today, the tree stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.

WICKEDWICKED1The untold musical story of The Wizard of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through the life-changing events which eventually label her “wicked,” introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, local prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself, a troubled man very unlike the one you may remember. As Elphaba, a passionate political activist if there ever was one, fights injustice and seeks to undo the mistakes of the past, dark secrets and personal tragedies shape the history of Oz, paying homage to the classic Wizard of Oz story while simultaneously changing fans’ understanding of it forever. A cautionary tale about love, friendship and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.
